What is an LED dancefloor?
An LED dancefloor is a modular dancefloor system made up of individual illuminated panels that lock together to create a seamless lit surface. The most popular version is the white starlit LED dancefloor — white panels with bright LED points that create a starfield effect from above, giving the illusion that you are dancing on a lit surface rather than a standard floor.
Black LED dancefloors use dark panels with coloured LED lighting for a more dramatic, nightclub-style effect. Both are available in custom sizes and are built to take the full weight of guests dancing throughout the evening.
What size do I need?
LED dancefloors are built in 2ft increments, starting from 12ft x 12ft (approximately 3.6m x 3.6m). The right size depends primarily on your guest count and venue space.
As a general guide:
- Up to 60 guests: 12ft x 12ft or 12ft x 14ft
- 60–100 guests: 14ft x 14ft or 16ft x 14ft
- 100–150 guests: 16ft x 16ft or 18ft x 16ft
- 150+ guests: 20ft x 16ft or larger
These are starting points. In practice, the shape of your venue, the position of the DJ, and whether you want the dancefloor to be the centrepiece of the room or tucked into one area will all affect the decision. A good supplier will assess your venue layout and advise accordingly.
What does installation involve?
A professional LED dancefloor is delivered, assembled and tested by the supplier’s team before your guests arrive. Setup typically takes 60 to 90 minutes depending on the size of the floor and the accessibility of the venue.
The floor is built on a flat surface — most venue floors work perfectly well. Where a surface is slightly uneven (some marquees or older buildings), professional suppliers carry underlay and levelling solutions to ensure a stable, safe surface.
Packdown happens at the end of the evening, usually after guests have left. The supplier disassembles and removes everything, leaving the venue as they found it.
Can I use it with other effects?
Yes — and many clients do. The most popular combination is an LED dancefloor with the Dancing on Clouds dry ice effect. The low-lying white fog rolls across the lit surface during the first dance, creating a visual that photographs extraordinarily well from every angle. The LED lights remain visible through the fog, and the combined effect is one of the most requested wedding setups we offer.
Cold spark fountains also work well alongside an LED dancefloor — the sparks firing upward against the lit floor below creates a high-production visual that fills any size room.
Does my venue need to approve it?
Most venues are happy with LED dancefloors as long as the supplier carries the appropriate insurance documentation and the floor is installed correctly without causing damage. Some older venues or venues with protected floors have specific requirements — your supplier should contact the venue in advance to confirm access, power requirements and any restrictions.
A professional supplier will handle venue liaison as part of the service. If yours does not, that is worth asking about before you book.
What should I look for in a supplier?
Not all LED dancefloor suppliers are equal. Things to look for:
- Public liability insurance — minimum £5m, ideally £10m. Always ask for proof.
- PAT-tested equipment — required by most venues and essential for safety.
- Real photos from recent events — not stock images. You want to see their actual product in a real venue.
- Delivery, installation and packdown included — some suppliers charge separately. Confirm what is in the price.
- Venue liaison — a professional supplier contacts your venue in advance. This avoids surprises on the day.
- Reviews mentioning the dancefloor specifically — look for clients commenting on the quality of the product and the professionalism of the team, not just general praise.
